I need urgently information on the following topic which is up to now not included in the FAQ:
On GridRepublic the screensaver of the running application program starts automatically by default.
However this setting interferes with my F-Secure virus scan program. If the weekly virus routine is running - which takes about 70-90% of the cpu time - and the sreensaver is started by GridRepublic there is no more possibility to control the computer via the mouse. It is necessary to terminate GridRepublic using the Windows task manager and the running application results are lost with a computing error message. This is uncomfortable if there was already hours of cpu time gone into the broken task.
The options or preferences entry of the GridRepublic desktop does not provide any point to choose an option to disable the automatic start of the screen saver function. With the BOINC manger program earlier there was an option to choose the screensaver for each individual project.
I use Windows XP Pro SP3. In the system control option there is NO screensaver choosen and although this GridRepublic screensaver starts after some idle time.
Please leave here information what to do to include this option in GridRepublic.
Thanks
Dr.Mabuse
Generally, the idea is to right click on Desktop -> Properties -> Screen Saver and then choose "None".
I see you posted this same issue a few days ago in another thread; and there is looks like you resolved your problem by unintalling GR Desktop and installing instead the latest version of BOINC, which will also work. Just be sure not to add projects during install (ie, cancel the "attach to projects" wizard, if it launches), and post-install be sure to "attach" your BOINC installation to your GridRepublic account:
Is there ANY solution for this problem using GridRepublic ?
Or do I have to stay with BOINC ?
thanks
Well, I'm not clear what was happenning in your case; it's unusual. And if using the latest BOINC release solved your problem, I'm sure that's the easiest solution.
We'll have a new GR release in a few weeks, keep an eye out on the newspage; it will have support for GPU-enabled processing and many smaller updates, including whatever small change apparently resolved your issue.
Hello, it seems to work now.
I used the option 'Kontoverwaltung anmelden' of the last BOINC version and put the URL of the GridRepublic in.
Now I have a new entry in the right-click menu of BOINC: 'Öffne BOINC web' and if I choose this I get promptaway to GridRepublic homepage. And the screensaver does no more interfere.
thanks for help
Just wanted to say I'm having more or less the same issue with GR 5.10.30. When watching a video, the GR screensaver kicks in, but if I go Desktop > Properties > Screensaver, "none" is selected. And I haven't found a way in GR Desktop to disable this.
Is this a known bug still? Should I be uninstalling GR and using BOINC to get around it for now?
Thanks!
e.
Well, I guess it's a known bug now : /
But I don't think it affects all users; I'm not sure the specific causes. In any event,
{a} Yes, for users of GR Desktop 5.10 and earlier, I think simplest resolution is to upgrade to the latest version of BOINC, which is currently 6.4.5.
{b} We'll soon be releasing a new version of GR, which should resolve this plus add many new features -- hopefully within the month.
Ahhhhhhhhhh
Not only can I not turn off the annoying grid republic screensaver no matter what I change in the screensaver settings, but dispite me using the computer and moving the mouse, the screensaver comes on every 5 minutes anyway.
You lost yourself a volunteer.
The Bad News: The program update did not come at the end of January due to unforeseen circumstances.
The Good News: GridRepublic's updated new program is schedules for release at the mid to end of June to correspond with new improvements and announcements. The new version is in testing and makes it even easier to join GridRepublic.
Work around until end of June Release:
Until then if you are having problems with the GridRepublic program the recommended procedure is to use the BOINC client and attach to GridRepublic: See here for instructions.
