Update specs after hardware upgrade

Hi,

I have upgraded my hardware (completely new computer), but kept the old harddisk and software (note that this is Linux, so no need to reinstall the OS, just update the display driver via network). Hostname and all remained the same.

Problem is  that my account manager (computers tab) keep showing the old specs (new progress in the projects keep adding up on the "old" computer - dual core amd, whereas the "real" computer has quad core intel).

I verified that the "client_state.xml" file on my computer contains the correct (new) cpu specs. I just do not know how to tell GR to reread the cpu-specs from my machine.

   thanks,

Looks like an issue with the way host records are merged. The BOINC projects will show your new system as a different system than what you had before. At GridRepublic, we try to automatically merge these records based on the hostname so you don't have to start over with 0 points just because you upgraded your hardware.

I changed the query to look to the host record that was updated most recently for such hardware information, which would be the obvious choice. See if that helped in your case.

Thanks.

For now I see no change (only the old specs are shown).

I verified that there were some result uploads over the night. Will check again sometime later.

What should I expect to find if it works fine? Would I see two computers with the same hostname (old one with the old points, and new one starting from 0 and accumulating the new credits) - this is what would be the most "correct" IMO,

or would it show only one entry with all the credits and the new specs?

You should see one computer with all the points and updated specs. We plan to have manual merging options in the future, where you could decide which hosts to merge or separate to your preference, but for now we just group by hostname automatically.

The fix yesterday didn't do what I expected it would. I have now fixed that fix with a new fix...should do the trick this time.

be sure to use the "refresh" button on the home page to update the stats display (or logout/login) ~

Well, did logout and login, checked again. Still shows the old specs...

What a blunder. I looked up your host records in the database and realized there was a second reason the first fix didn't work and that flaw then carried right on into the next fix. Now I have verified that it works in your specific case, so you really should see the new stats this time.

The fixes worked on my account because I didn't have the problem in the first place, imagine that...

Sorry, but specs here (hostname=penguin) still say "AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+" (old machine), whereas my client_status.xml says "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU    Q9400" (new machine).

According to the messages log, there were some reports to SETI and resetta over the night. How can I check my specs there?

I appreciate your effort and responsiveness.

You can login directly to projects via their websites:

if you joined initially via PTP (and so don't know your account details for login), it is a bit more complicated.  While logged into Facebook, you can get your account info here.  But: the password  you see on that page is not a "real" password: it will only work only for certain limited functions.  So, you'll need to get the info from that page, and then use it to change your "real" password via the "my account" tab on the GR homepage.  And then you'll be able to login to projects.

(At some  point we hope to provide a transparent login scheme for project servers, but this is going to take a while...)

Thanks Matt, I logged in to the projects, and verified that they both have the new specs upto date (for hostname penguin, they show the Inter Core2 Quad rather than the AMD). The specs on GR still correspond to the old one, so I guess Tristan's fix did not work after all.

Well, at least I know that the is problem is probably not on my side. Thank you both for your help. Please let me know if there is anything more I can check/verify that would help fixing this problem.

p.s. I also have another host on my account, (hostname=uzi13) also Linux, dual-core Intel, which has been ticking happily, with correct specs (no hardware changes)  the whole time. Do not know if it is relevant.

Hi,

It has been a while, and the situation seems to remain the same.

So here's a reminder:

* Since I upgraded my hardware, the computer listing in the projects' pages show two different computers with the same hostname.

* The GR computer list tries to merge the records, but the specs in the unified record match the OLD hardware instead of the new one.

* Tristan had tried to fix the problem in February, but it seems that the fix did not work in my case.

Any idea what the problem is?

(note: The project records show a third entry with the same hostname and no points - probably an early attempt before a previous upgrade. I also have a second, unrelated computer in another location which works fine)

    thanks,

            Amit

Hi Amit.  Sorry to hear you are still having troubles w. duplicate listings.

Can you clarify a couple things --

{1} What do you mean by "The GR computer list tries to merge the records"?

{2} What do you mean by "the specs in the unified record match the OLD hardware instead of the new one."?  (what is the "unified record", and is there some other record you are comparing to?)

Thanks.  (Just want to be sure we're talking about the same things.)

I'll try to be more explicit:

I have a computer called "penguin" which was upgraded from AMD Athlon 3000+ to Intel Core2 Q9400.

The "computers" listing in my Rosetta@home account shows 2 seperate "penguin"'s (actually there's a third, older older one with 0 credit, and yet another for a different machine: uzi13, but these are irrelevant for the current issue) - something like:

name      | credit     | cpu
-----------+------------+------
penguin | 200522 | Intel Core2 Q9400
penguin |     1344  | AMD Athlon 3000+

Quoting Tristan Olive's first reply (Feb. 25):
"At GridRepublic, we try to automatically merge these records based on  the hostname so you don't have to start over with 0 points just because  you upgraded your hardware".

So in the GR login I see a single entry (well, actually there's another one for the unrelated machine uzi13). Something like:

name      | points     | cpu
 -----------+------------+------
penguin | 416774 | AMD Athlon 3000+

(Well, the points include other projects, but I guess they should contain the total sum of 201866 credits coming from Rosetta).

This is fine, except that the specs shown match the old hardware (AMD Athlon, dead ever since a misfurtunate power surge) rather than the current one (the intel core2 quad,  which is quitely folding virtual proteins as we speak)...

(On 27 Feb, Tristan made a second fix that should have solved the problem, but apparently did not).

I hope that this longish reminder makes my report a little clearer :-)

   thanks,

         Amit

Out of curiosity, if you login directly at the website of one of your projects, what do you see listed for computers and credits?  (same as GR or different?)

Thanks for your persistence. It really is fixed this time.
